SHORT MAT BOWLING

Sunday March 1st

24 TEAMS ASSEMBLED FOR THE RE-ARRANGED (due to the snow of a few weeks ago) BOWLS TOURNAMENT.

IT WAS A STAR STUDDED EVENT, WITH A WORLD CHAMPION, WELSH NATIONAL TRIPLES AND CLUB CHAMPIONS AND QUITE A FEW FROM THE NATIONAL TEAM TAKING PART. THE ENTRY WAS SPLIT BETWEEN ENGLAND AND WALES. 5 COUNTY TRIPLES ENTRIES FROM AVON AND HEREFORD IN ENGLAND, AND MONMOUTHSHIRE, MONTGOMERSHIRE AND WEST GLAMORGAN IN WALES, THERE WAS ALSO A GOOD SPRINKLING OF CLUB TEAMS.

THE GROUP STAGES THREW UP SOME SUPRISES WITH ROSS ON WYE CLUB BEATING FAVOURITES WEST GLAMORGANSHIRE 12-11, ALTHOUGH BOTH TEAMS QUALIFIED FOR THE KNOCK-OUT STAGES LATER IN THE DAY.

LOCAL CLUB COLEFORD WON ALL 3 OF THEIR GROUP MATCHES TO EARN A QUARTER FINAL AGAINST THE FOREST OF DEAN CLUB.

THERE WERE 4 ENGLISH AND 4 WELSH TEAMS IN THE LAST 8 AND HONOURS WERE EVEN. THE FOREST OF DEAN TRIPLE WERE EASY WINNERS AGAINST COLEFORD, AND ROSS, HAVING BEEN 10-2 DOWN WITH 4 ENDS TO PLAY AGAINST SKEWEN "B" FROM SWANSEA, SCORED A 3 ON THE LAST END TO PULL LEVEL AND TAKE IT ON THE EXTRA `END.

SKEWENS A TEAM HAD A NARROW WIN OVER MONTGOMERYSHIRE AND WEST GLAMORGAN HAD RECOVERED FROM THEIR EARLIER UPSET TO COMFORTABLE BEAT HEREFORDSHIRE 22-2

IN THE SEMI’S, THE FOREST TRIPLE OF VAL AYRES, TONY FREEGARD AND MIKE WALL JUST HELD OFF WELSH NATIONAL CHAMPIONS SKEWEN TO REACH THE FINAL, TO MEET WEST GLAMORGAN WHO REVERSED THEIR EARLIER LOSS TO ROSS.

THE FOREST TEAM HAD PLAYED THEIR BEST BOWLS IN THE SEMI-FINAL AND WERE OUTPLAYED BY A STRONG TRIPLE FROM WEST GLAMORGAN, WHO WON, ALONG WITH A VERY LARGE SILVER TROPHY, A WEEKS HOLIDAY AT BELLS HOTEL AND 3 BOTTLES OF BUBBLY.

A LONG DAY OF 10 HOURS BOWLING, BUT EVERYONE AGREED IT HAD BEEN A GREAT SUCCESS FOR THIS FIRST EVENT AT BELLS NEW BOWLS HALL.

COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIPS

THE FOURS WAS PLAYED TO A COMPLETION IN NOVEMBER,

RESULTS;

1st ROYAL FOREST OF DEAN

2nd USK

3rd MATHERN

The semi-finals and finals of the Singles, Pairs and Triples were held over until January 10th, and were played in the brand new short mat hall at Bells Hotel in Coleford.

First final was for the Pairs, with Mike Wall and Tony Freegard of RFOD taking on Audrey Harrison and Steve Jones of Mathern. A good standard of play with Mike and Tony always just a few shots ahead, winning 12-8. In 3rd spot was Val and Graham Ayres of Forest of Dean.

The singles had Tony Freegard up against Steve Jones once again. Tony was playing awesome bowls, and good as Steve was, he could not cope with the inch perfect accuracy Tony was producing. Final score 15-7.

The 3rd place play off saw Lou Meredith of Mathern just hold off Dave Powell (RFOD) 13-11

The last final was the triples. In the semi’s, we had 2 Mathern triples facing each other in one, and 2 RFOD teams in the other, so another match up was going to happen between these two clubs in the final.

Tony Freegards triples was just pipped in his match to stop him from winning all four titles, and it was left to Gordon Baker, Graham Stayte and Mike Wall to face the Mathern team of Audrey Harrison, Steve Jones and Wally Gill.

The Mathern three were to strong for the Forest boys on the day and ran out easy winners 16-8 with an end to spare.

3rd place went to RFODs 2nd team.
